Draft Town, Illinois

After decades in New York, the NFL Draft is back in Chicago. The close proximity gave me a chance to check out 'Draft Town.' It was an interesting mix of things going on and there were fans of every team mixed in together. If you like these make sure to check out the other coverage from my cohorts here at packersnews.com. Thanks for looking.

Miss Green Bay Area 2015

On Wednesday I got assigned to cover the Miss Green Bay Area pageant at the Meyer Theatre Saturday. Having met a former Miss GBA when I shot a wedding in 2013, I was well aware that former Press-Gazette photographer Corey Wilson had built a lot of goodwill with the organization. He got me in contact with them and talked me up a bit, which was a great help. Thanks Corey! I know form experience that kind of positive relationship can really pave the path for the kind of access that makes for great photos. Plus I thought it would be cool to follow someone as they prep and compete through Miss GBA, win it and then go on to do many more things.

The one issue with that is you can't know who is going to win the competition beforehand and you also can't cover every aspect of every contestant as they are spread out doing different things simultaneously in the hours leading up to the show. Jennie, the first contestant to talk to me, introduced herself as the 'Grandma' of the competition. Grandma apparently translates to being a Miss GBA pageant veteran who will age out of being able to compete and knows this is her last hurrah. I figured Jennie would be a great story because those years of pageantry would either draw to a close or she'd win.

I saw a lot of amazing talents at rehearsal but I got a good vibe. So I made sure to shoot Jennie throughout every aspect of the time I was covering the pageant while getting as much as possible of everyone else too.

Winning Images

This weekend I was able to listen to 6 very inspiring visual journalists and photographers speak and meet and chat with a few of them at the Midwest Photo Summit put on by the Illinois Press Photographers Association. Several of those speakers also judged professional work in the IPPA's Best of Photography competition and they gave awards to a few of the images and stories I entered.

The winning images are posted on IPPA's website: http://www.ippaonline.org/blog/

My sports picture story about Danika, the 14-year-old fighter took 2nd place in the Sports picture story category. The whole story can be seen here: http://kylebursaw.com/aspiring-champion/

I also took 1st place in general news category with my photo of Matt taking his drug test.

The recovery of John Hahn

John Hahn is a DeKalb art teacher who suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm on November 21, 2011 just before his morning commute to work. The aneurysm caused him to fall and caused a few other injuries, including a hip injury that required surgery.  These images are from his rehab sessions, his first day driving and his first day back to school.

Along Lincoln Highway

A reporter at a sister newspaper was writing a story that had a lede describing the main highway running through DeKalb on the way to Huskie Stadium in a longer piece about the Orange Bowl-bound Huskies bursting out of a small town without the greatest of facilities onto this national stage.

Well, the angle of the story changed after I shot these and most of these never got used, but I wanted to share anyway.

A season gone

I think in just about any smaller community, high school football reigns supreme. At least in terms of importance of coverage. Since August, I've been shooting portraits, practices and a quarter or two of football each Friday night. (We have an early deadline on Fridays and thus I need to submit my work before the games have ended). Here's a handful of shots from the season.
